Adding Simple Elegance to a Environmental Portrait

A majority of the commercial shooting I have encountered required the images feature the technology first and the human subject secondary. This “technology then human subject” concept was hard for me to grasp at first coming from a wedding/portrait background. The pictured project was commissioned as a human interest story instead  – featuring the researcher. Oddly enough, the only difference was a slight adjustment in the facial lighting to accommodate having the subject look toward the lens vs. the technology.

This image was lit with two (2) Alien Bee 1600’s with grids and barn doors (main – camera left & rim – camera right). Another Alien Bee 1600 with a red gel was placed on the floor behind to color the back wall. A Vivitar 283 with barn doors was positioned behind the column of the electron microscope to provide an additional separation rim light to the subject. A Quantaray micro slave with a green gel was taped to the glass of microscope viewing port (aimed inward) and Photoshopped out in post production. The instrument panel displays were taken from a timed exposure and also stripped in in post. Canon 1Ds mk III, 16-35 f/2.8 L, 1/160 sec. @ f/16, ISO 100. Triggered via Quantum radio slave.
