PPGBA Merit Award Competition Image: “High Velocity” (20″ x 24″ high gloss). Despite the apparent movement displayed in the image, the go-kart was actually sitting still on the pit lane grid and set in motion with post production. To maintain the proper perspective, the foreground, mid-ground and background had to be blurred in sections – decreasing the effect with distance from the camera and leading toward the vanishing point in the upper left hand corner of the image. The dramatic angle and distortion was achieved by shooting with the ultra-wide angle lens only 11″ from the leading edge of the go-kart. The lighting was kept simple using a single Quantum X5dr Qflash head in a 12″ x 12″ soft box, powered by a Norman 400b power supply positioned to the camera left. Canon 5D camera, 15mm f/2.8 fish eye lens, 1/500 sec @ f/6.3, ISO 100, triggered via Quantum radio slave.
On a side note – I am very fortunate to own and drive one of these extremely powerful 125cc shifter karts. At full tilt, these shifter karts deliver more acceleration and G-forces than most street legal cars with the exception of some of the exotics. Needless to say, I would rather spend the day pounding around the shifter kart track even if someone were foolish enough to hand me the keys to their sports car.
