Sculpting With Light

_G6K4289 -20

The objective of this shoot was to capture the muscle definition of competition body builder Reggie Williams.  Hard main lights with grid spots were employed to accent the contours of Reggie’s body with highlights and shadows.  A 22″ beauty dish/grid spot was positioned high overhead on a boom to illuminate his face.  Another 22″ beauty dish/grid spot/barn doors was aimed at his  mid section to accentuate his abdominal muscles.  A 32″ silver reflector was placed in front and below to add back some shadow detail.  Two (2) 48″ x 12″ strip boxes/grids flanked each side along with another 48″ x 12″ strip box overhead and behind were used to separate the subject away from the background.  Lastly, a head with a 10″ round reflector/barn doors provided the background light.  All light sources were Norman 2000 heads powered by three separate Norman power packs. Canon 1Ds mk III, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, triggered via Quantum radio slaves.  1/160 sec @ f/11, ISO 100.

Just by changing the head position and adding a prop, the same lighting set up created a very different mood.
